Our History

The course was built in two stages in the Club’s history. The first nine holes were designed and built in 1924 by Louis Chiappetta, a well-known golf professional throughout the 1920’s. Just prior to starting the project, Mr. Chiappetta broke all amateur and professional records with a 67 on the course of the Greenwich Country Club in 1922. He held his own against such formidable opponents as Gene Sarazen, Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen. Mr. Chiappetta was quite the celebrity in Danville and was said to have drawn a crowd anytime he ventured downtown during the golf course construction project.

Golf course architect, Benjamin J. Wihry, completed the last nine holes in1972. Mr. Wihry was a highly respected member of the ASGCA. He designed six additional courses in Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana in the 1960’s and1970’s. Many of these have hosted PGA, LPGA and State Amateur competitions. Danville Country Club has hosted men’s, women’s and youth Sate Amateur events over the years, and is well known for hosting the J.E. Butler and Tee Cup competitions.
